How to Calculate The Volume Weight of Air/international Express? How to Save on Shipping
How to calculate the dimensional weight of air freight and international express? This is a question we are often asked.
1. What is volume weight?
The volumetric weight is for low-density goods, and the weight of the goods is calculated by the size of the volume of the goods. Airlines stipulate that the weight of goods is divided into two types, one is the actual weight of the goods (Actual weight), and the other is the volume weight (Volume weight. The actual weight is easy to understand, that is, the weight of the goods after weighing is The actual gross weight (Gross weight), and the volume weight is the weight obtained by the formula according to the dimensional data of the goods.

2. Why is there volume weight?
Since international air/express goods are placed in the cargo hold, most of the air/express goods are high-value light industrial/electronic products, which occupy a large space but are very light in weight, such as It is unreasonable to calculate the freight of the goods according to the actual weight, so the international air/express has stipulated the standard of volume weight.
The airline stipulates that the weight of the cargo is divided into the actual weight and the volume weight, and whichever weight is larger will be calculated according to which one, so when the cargo is a bubble cargo when the volume weight is greater than the actual weight, the air freight cost must be calculated according to the volume weight. That is, the larger the volume weight and the actual weight is taken as the Chargeable Weight. For example, the volume weight of cotton and other goods by air will be much larger than the actual weight, which belongs to the bubble goods, so the volume weight should be used as the billable weight. For high-density goods such as air transport iron/mold, the actual weight will be much larger than the volume weight, which is heavy goods, and the billing weight will be based on the actual weight.
3. There is a formula for calculating the volume weight as follows:
Length (cm) X Width (cm) X Height (cm)/6000 = volumetric weight in kilograms. For example, if the length, width, and height of a piece of goods are all 100cm, the air volume weight of the goods is calculated by the formula to be 167kg, which means that the air volume weight of 1 cubic meter of goods is 167kg.
Calculate the volume of the cargo by measuring the length, width, and height of the cargo (in cm), and then divide it by 6000, which is the air freight volume weight.
Courier companies calculate the volume weight slightly differently. The calculation method is as follows (:
Length (cm) X width (cm) X height (cm) / 5000 = volumetric weight in kilograms, the air volume weight of 1 cubic meter of goods is 200 kilograms.

4. How to save air/express logistics freight?
①. When packing, pay attention to the placement of the goods and the utilization of space to achieve reasonable loading. Especially for cardboard goods, the size of the outer box must be planned before making the outer packaging.
②. If the goods are heavy or light, if they are shipped by air, try to ship them together, or by express or air/sea delivery, and then try to close the box as much as possible without being overweight and oversized, which can reduce some shipping costs.
③. When inquiring with us, inform you of the type of goods and the required time limit for arrival at the port, so that it is more convenient for the freight forwarder to provide more accurate and better prices that meet your requirements.
